Rice’s Point Rail Enterprises Debuts New Private Railcar on Halloway

DULUTH, MN — Rice’s Point Rail Enterprises, a Duluth, MN-based private company, today announced the debut of Head of the Lakes, a fully rehabilitated historic executive railcar now available for charter on Halloway, the premier marketplace for luxury and experiential rail travel. The car represents an entirely new generation of private heritage railcar, integrating a brand-new interior with modern amenities that make it the perfect choice for entertaining and traveling.
The car is available for charter excursions on the North Shore Scenic Railroad between Duluth and Two Harbors, traveling along the stunning North Shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area.
A Rich History, Reimagined
Head of the Lakes carries a storied past. One of six executive business cars built for Canadian National Railway by National Steel Car Company in 1959, she originally served the railway’s top executives --- including the Prairie Division vice president --- as Car 92, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1994, the car was converted to private charter use, renamed the Scottish Thistle, and relocated to Southern California, from which she completed numerous private charter trips across North America.
In 2022, the car was acquired by a Duluth-based company with a vision to restore it to active service in the North Star State, where well-known financier Jay Cooke connected transcontinental rail and sail at the Zenith City of the Unsalted Seas when construction of his Northern Pacific Railway began just west of Duluth in 1870. Today, Duluth’s rail and sail connection still hums with activity, linking four Class I railroads to North America’s farthest-inland seaport. Luxuriously rebuilt, Head of the Lakes embodies all of that historical ambition and modern vitality from its home at the Duluth Cargo Connect multimodal logistics hub, where this classic car is ready to roll into a modern new life.
Historic Character, Modern Amenities
The newly christened Head of the Lakes emerged from its renovation with a completely redesigned interior, modern amenities, and fresh paint that honors the elegance of its executive heritage. At 85 feet in length, the car comfortably accommodates up to 18 guests.

It features an expansive lounge with leather swivel chairs, table seating, and a well-appointed bar. Dual Wi-Fi connectivity via Starlink and cellular service, paired with modern audio-visual equipment, makes the car equally suited for business meetings, sports-themed events, and private celebrations. Guests can also enjoy an open-air observation platform, a modern galley, and a private office/small meeting area that converts to sleeping accommodations for two.
Head of the Lakes is ideally suited for executive retreats, board meetings, unique client outings, group entertainment, and private dinner excursions.
